The French dip sandwich has an intriguing history that dates back to the early 20th century in Los Angeles, California. There are several claims regarding its origin, but the most popular story attributes its creation to either Philippe’s or Cole’s, two iconic delis that have stood the test of time. According to one account, the sandwich was invented accidentally when a butcher at Philippe’s dipped a French roll into the beef drippings, creating a flavorful and moist experience. This fortuitous event led to the birth of a culinary classic that is now enjoyed across the United States and beyond.

12 slider rolls (soft)

1 lb thinly sliced roast beef

1 cup provolone cheese, shredded

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

2 cups beef broth

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Preheat Your Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Prepare the Onion: In a skillet over medium heat, melt a tablespoon of butter and add the thinly sliced onion. Sauté for 5-7 minutes until caramelized and golden brown, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat.

Make the Broth Mixture: In a medium saucepan, combine the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and a pinch of black pepper. Heat over low until warm.

Assemble the Sliders: Cut the slider rolls in half. Place the bottom halves of the rolls in a greased baking dish. Layer with thinly sliced roast beef, sautéed onions, and top with shredded provolone cheese. Place the top halves of the rolls on top.

Brush & Bake: Combine the melted butter and a bit more garlic powder. Brush the tops of the slider rolls with the butter mixture. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 15 minutes, then uncover and bake an additional 5-10 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and the tops are golden.

Serve with Dip: While the sliders are baking, warm the beef broth mixture again. Once sliders are done, remove them from the oven, slice into individual sliders, and serve with warm beef broth for dipping.

Garnish and Enjoy: Sprinkle chopped parsley over sliders for a fresh touch, then enjoy them hot!
