8 oz whole wheat pasta

2 cups fresh broccoli florets

2 tablespoons olive oil

3 cloves garlic, minced

1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Juice of 1 lemon

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Fresh basil leaves for garnish

Instructions
 

Cook the Pasta: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the whole wheat pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Reserve about 1 cup of pasta water, then drain the pasta and set aside.

    Prepare the Broccoli: In the same pot, bring a small amount of salted water to a boil. Add the broccoli florets and blanch for about 2-3 minutes until they turn bright green and are tender-crisp. Drain and immediately transfer to an ice bath to stop the cooking process.

      Sauté the Garlic: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and red pepper flakes (if using), and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.

        Combine: Add the drained pasta and blanched broccoli to the skillet. Toss to combine, gradually adding reserved pasta water until you reach your desired sauce consistency.

          Season: Stir in the lemon juice, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until everything is evenly coated. If desired, sprinkle in the Parmesan cheese and stir until melted and incorporated.

            Serve: Plate the pasta and garnish with fresh basil leaves. Enjoy warm, drizzled with a little extra olive oil if desired.
