Ingredients

For the Dough:

4 cups all-purpose flour

1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) instant yeast

½ cup granulated sugar

1 tsp salt

1 cup whole milk, warmed

⅓ cup unsalted butter, melted

2 large eggs

For the Filling:

2 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and diced

¾ cup brown sugar

2 tbsp ground cinnamon

¼ cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

For the Cream Cheese Frosting:

8 oz cream cheese, softened

½ cup unsalted butter, softened

4 cups powdered sugar

2 tsp vanilla extract

2-3 tbsp milk (as needed for consistency)

Instructions

Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, instant yeast, sugar, and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together the warm milk, melted butter, and eggs. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry mixture and knead until a smooth dough forms (about 5-7 minutes).

First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, about 1 hour.

Prepare the Filling: While the dough is rising, mix the diced apples, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a bowl until the apples are evenly coated. Set aside.

Roll out the Dough: After the dough has risen, punch it down to release air. On a floured surface, roll the dough into a large rectangle, approximately 16x12 inches.

Assemble the Rolls: Spread the softened butter over the dough evenly. Then, sprinkle the apple mixture over the butter, followed by the nuts if using. Roll the dough tightly from the long side into a log.

Cut into Rolls: Using a sharp knife or dental floss, cut the log into 12 equal rolls. Place the rolls in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish or on a parchment-lined baking tray.

Second Rise: Cover the rolls with a towel and let them rise again in a warm place until they puff up, about 30 minutes.

Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.

Make the Frosting: In a mixing bowl, beat together the softened cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add the powdered sugar and vanilla, mixing until combined. Adjust with milk for desired consistency.

Frost and Serve: Once the rolls are out of the oven, let them cool for about 10 minutes. Generously spread the cream cheese frosting over the warm rolls. Serve and enjoy!
